Compendium Privilegiorum Fratrum Minorum et aliorum Mendicantium et non Mendicantium

Publisher: Neapoli (Naples): Ex Typographia Stelliolæ, ad Portam Regalem, 1595.

Edition: Secundo editum (second, enlarged post-Tridentine edition).

Binding: Contemporary quarter vellum over marbled paper boards, manuscript spine titles, early printed paper shelf labels at foot; edges sprinkled. 2 vols., quarto.

Description: A handsome, complete two-volume Naples 1595 compendium of the privileges, indulgences, exemptions and decrees granted to the Franciscans (Friars Minor) and other mendicant orders—newly re-organized after Trent and enlarged by the Capuchin friar Hieronymus a Sorbo. Arranged alphabetically for use in the field, the work reads as a legal-theological toolkit of the Counter-Reformation: from abbots and confessors to preaching rights, episcopal exemptions, burial privileges, and the administration of indulgences.

Visually striking, the set opens with a superb engraved architectural title-border crowded with the great monastic and mendicant saints—Francis, Dominic, Benedict, Augustine—a declaration that this is not merely a handbook but a manifesto for regular life renewed under Tridentine discipline. Printed in Naples, then one of Catholic Europe’s powerhouse presses, these volumes speak to the Church’s drive to codify practice and authority across the rapidly expanding Franciscan family (including the reforming Capuchins).
On the shelf, the vellum-over-marbled bindings and manuscript spine titling offer exactly the lived, ecclesiastical presence collectors crave; in the hand, the text reveals the working DNA of mendicant governance at the turn of the seventeenth century. For libraries and devoted Franciscan collectors alike, this is a centerpiece: early, complete, and anchored in the very milieu it served.
Annotation (provenance & marks):
Ex-Franciscan institutional copy: ink stamps of the Bibliothèque des Pères Franciscains, Amiens (both vols.). Appropriate and desirable provenance for the subject.
Early monastic ownership: contemporary inscription on the dedication/title area reading (approx.): “di lato Gianni Duraco di capucchini” — i.e., “of Friar Gianni Duraco, Capuchin.” This confirms early Capuchin use/ownership.
Occasional marginalia and paragraph marks in an early clerical hand; no modern library barcodes or pockets. Early paper shelf labels at spine feet preserved.

Condition: Very good: vellum with expected toning and light soil, small losses to paper labels, boards rubbed; text blocks generally clean with scattered foxing or light damp to a few margins; engraved title-border sharp; typography dark and appealing; joints sound.

Annotation: Ex-Franciscan institutional copy, with circular ink stamps “Bibliothèque des Pères Franciscains – Amiens” in each volume (title and prelims). Contemporary ownership inscription in brown ink on the dedication/title reading approx. “di lato Gianni Duraco di capucchini” — i.e., belonging to Friar Gianni Duraco, Capuchin — confirming early monastic ownership and use. Light contemporary marginalia/paragraph marks at a few entries (esp. indulgences/privileges); no modern library inserts or barcodes. Early printed shelf labels retained at spine feet, supporting long ecclesiastical shelf history.
