Description: First edition of Abbé Hauchecorne’s biography of Michelangelo Buonarroti, one of the earliest comprehensive lives of the Renaissance master published in France. Issued at Paris in 1783 by L. Cellot (successor to Jombert, Libraire du Roi), and printed with Approbation et Privilège du Roi, the volume situates Michelangelo within the heroic canon of European art at the close of the Ancien Régime.

The work draws not only on accounts of Michelangelo’s artistic triumphs in painting, sculpture, and architecture, but also includes appended literary tributes such as the ode by Laura Battiferri Ammannati on the artist’s death, here printed in Italian verse. The biography reflects Enlightenment France’s growing veneration for Renaissance genius, bridging classical antiquity and modern aesthetics.
This copy carries contemporary provenance from a French collège, with ownership inscription on the marbled endpaper, adding institutional and pedagogical context. Complete with approbation and royal privilege leaves at the close.
A scarce and desirable early French biography of Michelangelo, valuable both for art-historical collections and for its insight into the transmission of Renaissance reputation in 18th-century France.

Condition: Good. Binding rubbed and worn at extremities, spine with some cracking at joints and loss at head and tail, corners bumped. Interior generally crisp and clean, some gatherings slightly proud, marbled endpapers intact, ownership inscription present.

Annotation: Scarce first edition of Hauchecorne’s French biography of Michelangelo, with appended ode by Laura Battiferri; provenance from a French collège; contemporary mottled calf binding.
