Binding: Contemporary French full calf, spine gilt in compartments with morocco title-label. Rubbed and worn, loss at head of spine, corners bumped, hinges tender but holding. All edges sprinkled red. 4to.

Description: Posthumous 1681 Paris edition of the legal orations and collected writings of Olivier Patru, one of the founding members of the Académie française and a celebrated advocate of the 17th century. Patru was renowned for his eloquence at the bar and his role in refining French forensic style; his plaidoyers (pleadings) were considered models of clarity and rhetoric.

This “nouvelle édition” includes pieces newly gathered from his papers after his death, making it more comprehensive than earlier collections. Printed by Sébastien Mabre-Cramoisy, Imprimeur du Roy, one of the foremost royal printers of the Grand Siècle, and bearing the pelican printer’s device on the title.

Provenance: 19th-century library bookplate to front pastedown, with manuscript signature “Vignon” to title-page. A solid contemporary binding, showing expected wear but attractive on the shelf, with the textblock clean and crisp.

Condition: Good — contemporary calf rubbed, spine worn with losses at head; joints tender but holding; textblock clean and complete.

Annotation: Posthumous 1681 Paris edition of Patru’s celebrated legal pleadings and writings, printed by Mabre-Cramoisy, with new pieces added from his papers.
