Les Oeuvres Meslées de Plutarque

Publisher: Lyon: Antoine Chuppin, 1584.

Illustration: : Woodcut printer’s device on title-page.

Edition: Lyon, Antoine Chuppin, 1583. French translation of the Moralia. (first French translations appeared mid-16th century; this Lyon edition is an important revised printing).

Binding: Contemporary limp vellum with yapp edges, remains of ties. Wrinkled, darkened, and worn, but intact. Folio.

Description: Substantial Renaissance French edition of Plutarch’s Moralia (Oeuvres Meslées), a collection of essays and dialogues on ethics, politics, philosophy, and religion. The Moralia exerted enormous influence on Renaissance humanist thought; Montaigne in particular borrowed heavily from Plutarch in composing his Essais.

This Lyon edition of 1584, printed by Antoine Chuppin, offers one of the major vernacular translations of the Moralia, revised and corrected, with extensive marginal annotations, summaries, and a detailed subject index. These editions were essential in transmitting Greek philosophy into the French humanist milieu.

Condition: Bound in contemporary limp vellum, darkened and wrinkled, with remains of ties, but structurally solid. Textblock generally clean with strong paper. One preliminary leaf (“Aux Lecteurs, S.G.S.”) shows a paper flaw/tear with some loss of text — the only significant defect noted. Otherwise, a complete and substantial folio.

An important Renaissance French Plutarch, directly tied to the intellectual sources of Montaigne’s Essais and a cornerstone of European humanism.

Condition: Fair to Good — vellum binding darkened and wrinkled with losses to ties; one prelim leaf damaged with some text loss; otherwise complete, solid, and generally clean.

Annotation: Lyon 1584 folio French translation of Plutarch’s Moralia (Oeuvres Meslées), bound in contemporary vellum; an important Renaissance humanist edition, with one prelim leaf showing text loss from a paper flaw.
