Quaestionum Regularium et Canonicarum

Publisher: Venice: Baretto, 1616.

Edition: Venetian edition; complete set (Tomi I–IV, bound as 2 vols)

Binding: Contemporary limp vellum over boards; two folio volumes (Tomus I–II; Tomus III–IV), raised bands, gilt-lettered leather spine labels; folio, approx. 33 × 23 cm

Description: A handsome and substantial Venetian folio, complete in four books bound as two volumes. This is Rodrigues’ major canon-law compendium, an authoritative synthesis of Counter-Reformation legal and theological thought. The work covers the privileges and obligations of religious orders (Quaestiones Regulares), the intricacies of canon law (Quaestiones Canonicae), and the Praxis Criminalis—a pivotal text bridging ecclesiastical and secular criminal procedure in post-Tridentine Europe.

These volumes retain their original 17th-century vellum bindings, with raised bands and gilt-lettered spine labels still present. Despite wear to the vellum—darkening, creases, and small splits—the set remains structurally strong, with wide-margined, crisp text throughout. Early ownership inscriptions and a monastic library stamp (Couvent des E… Bibliothèque, Lille) attest to the set’s historic ecclesiastical provenance.

Provenance: Rich Franciscan ownership history. Contemporary inscriptions: “Ad usum Gregorij ordinis Reg.” (for the use of Gregory, of the Order of Friars Minor); “Fratr[is] ab Assio Minorum Observantium … Op. d’Ancon” (from the Observant Franciscans of Assisi and the convent of Ancona). Later 18th/19th-century blue oval stamp of the Convent of the Friars Minor, Bibliothèque Notre-Dame de Bailleul, Lille. This distinguished chain of custody vividly documents the set’s continuous ecclesiastical use from Italy to France.
Complete four-tome Venetian sets of Rodrigues are exceptionally scarce in private hands. While institutions such as the Vatican, BnF, and British Library hold copies, few examples circulate on the market. This is an impressive survival of an important canon-law monument, well-suited for both institutional acquisition and serious private collections.

Condition: Good (externally worn vellum, structurally sound; internally clean, complete, wide-margined).

Annotation: Scarce in commerce; complete four-tome Venetian set with monastic provenance.
