Voyage de Messieurs François Le Coigneux; de Bachaumont; et Cl. Emman. Lhuillier, Chapelle

Publisher: La Haye: Pierre Gosse & Jean Neaulme, 1732.

Edition: Nouvelle édition, revue, corrigée et augmentée

Description: A classic of French libertine and satirical literature, first composed in the mid-17th century and attributed to François Le Coigneux de Bachaumont and Claude-Emmanuel Lhuillier (known as Chapelle). Ostensibly the tale of a convivial journey through the wine regions of France, the Voyage blends satire, wit, and bacchic poetry, and quickly became a favorite among readers of the Ancien Régime.

This 1732 Hague edition, printed by Pierre Gosse and Jean Neaulme, is revised, corrected, and augmented, reflecting the enduring popularity of the text in the 18th century. Includes additional sections of poetry (Poésies héroïques, gaillardes, et diverses) at the close. Title-page printed in red and black.

Binding: Contemporary calf binding, gilt-tooled spine with floral devices and raised bands, original label. Wear with loss at head of spine, scuffing to boards, and rubbed corners; structurally sound.

Interior: Clean and complete, occasional foxing, toning, and small marginal tears consistent with age. Wide margins.

A scarce early 18th-century edition of one of the most famous libertine poems of French literature, still in its original binding.

Condition: Good (binding rubbed and chipped with spine loss; joints tender but holding; text complete, toned, with occasional foxing and minor tears).

Annotation: Early Hague edition of the celebrated libertine Voyage de Bachaumont et Chapelle, revised and enlarged, in contemporary calf binding.
